Working Group

At the outset of the Visitor Center and Day Use/Special Event Area project, California State Parks formed a Working Group comprised of 10-12 representatives of the communities related to Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. The Working Group’s role is to provide feedback and guidance throughout the process and to supplement the community input provided at public workshops, pop-up events, and online. The Working Group meets monthly and advises California State Parks on major project deliverables. Their guidance ensures that stakeholders’ voices are heard, valued, and reflected in the project.

Past Outreach Opportunities

Visitor Center Pop-up Event

Date: February 21, 2026
Location: Allensworth Elementary School, 3320 Young Rd., Allensworth, CA 93219

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, California State Parks hosted a table at the Black History Celebration located at the Allensworth Elementary School. The Allensworth Historic Cemetery Committee organized this event in partnership with the Allensworth Progressive Association. The program included storytelling, poetry readings, music, dance, art display etc. California State Parks heard ideas from youth about how best they learn, what they would like to learn at the new visitor center, and what they think the visitor center should look like.

Visioning Pop-up Event

Date: October 11, 2025
Location: Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

On October 11, 2025, California State Parks hosted a booth at the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park Annual Rededication Event to collect feedback on the Draft Vision and Guiding Principles, Draft Parkwide Concept Plan, and Draft Concept for the Visitor Center and Day Use/Special Event Area.

Visioning Pop-up Event

Date: June 14, 2025
Location: Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

On June 14, 2025, California State Parks hosted a booth at the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park Juneteenth event to collect input on future improvements at the park including the Visitor Center and Day Use/Special Event. Feedback collected at this event will inform a parkwide vision, guiding principles, and concept plan.

Virtual Visioning Workshop

Wednesday, May 14, 2025
6:00 to 8:00 pm via Zoom

This workshop provided participants the opportunity to explore, discuss, and inform a vision and concept plan for the future of Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. Topics covered at the workshop included:

  • The history of Allensworth and the visitor and event center project.
  • A discussion about the vision for the park.
  • A discussion about future improvements to the park, including the day use event area and visitor center.

The intent of this virtual space was to honestly explore how past narratives, present realities, and future aspirations of Allensworth and the broader Black, Indigenous, and Migrant cultures are engaged and expressed at the park.

Visioning Pop-up Event

Date: April 12, 2025
Location: Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

On April 12, 2025, California State Parks hosted a booth at the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park Founder’s Day Event to gather feedback on the things people love about the park and what opportunities there are for improvement. Participants could share their ideas by marking up a map or sharing their comments verbally with California State Parks staff.

Visioning Pop-up Event

Date: February 8, 2025
Location: Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park

On February 8, 2025, California State Parks held an outreach event during the Black History Month Event at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. The purpose of the event was to hear participants’ ideas about what stories and ideas should be reflected in the future Visitor Center and Day Use/Special Event Area project. Participants could visit a booth to share their thoughts and/or participate in a large group discussion held at the First Baptist Church.

Online Activities

California State Parks is in the early planning and design phase for a new visitor center and day use event area at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park (SHP). To guide these improvements, a vision and guiding principles, informed by community input, will be established at the outset of the process. This survey will be open through August 22, 2025.
